Thousands of people gathered hours in advance in the Zócalo Capitalino to await and celebrate with the next president of Mexico

In a landmark victory for Mexico, the country has elected its first female president, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, from the Morena party. According to the quick count by the National Electoral Institute (INE), Dr. Sheinbaum secured between 58.6% and 60.7% of the votes nationwide.

Xóchitl Gálvez, the candidate from the “Strength and Heart for Mexico” coalition of the PRI, PAN, and PRD parties, received 27.6% of the vote, while Jorge Álvarez Máynez of the Citizen Movement party garnered between 9.9% and 10.8%.

Reactions were swift, with current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressing his joy through a message on the social media platform "X," praising the democratic engagement of the Mexican people in the June 2nd election.

“I am very happy, proud to be the president of Mexico. Today’s election demonstrated that our people are highly politically engaged with a democratic vocation, understanding democracy as power for the people and with the people, democracy with a social dimension,” he stated.

Opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez, despite initially suggesting possible fraud in comments on "X," later conceded defeat and thanked her supporters.

“Being your candidate has been the greatest honor of my life. You can always count on me as a warrior who will fight for a country that respects life, truth, and freedom. Onward and viva Mexico,” she declared to hundreds of her supporters.

Jorge Álvarez Máynez, the Citizen Movement candidate, expressed his gratitude on Monday morning to the millions who trusted his party, with a flyer stating “6 million thanks.”

Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated her victory with her team past noon on Monday, June 3rd, joined by thousands of people who had gathered in the Zócalo Capitalino to celebrate with the next president of Mexico.
