This Holiday shopping season, know the allowance to avoid additional tax payments

During the holiday season, a common question among border residents is how much merchandise they can bring into Mexico from the United States without facing penalties. The Mexican Tax Administration Service (SAT) allows adults to bring a limited amount of goods, provided they are for personal use.

Under normal circumstances, Mexican nationals have a duty-free allowance of $300 USD per person. However, during the "Programa Paisano," effective from November 29, 2023, to January 8, 2024, this amount increases to $500 USD per traveler. It’s important to note that this increase does not apply to residents of border areas, who must adhere to specific regional rules.

For those residing in states such as Baja California, Baja California Sur, Quintana Roo, and certain parts of Sonora, Chiapas, and Oaxaca, the duty-free allowance is limited to $150 USD per day. If traveling in a group of two or more in a single vehicle, the total value of goods permitted is capped at $400 USD per vehicle.

During the Programa Paisano, border residents are allowed to bring goods worth up to $300 USD.

Prohibited Goods

The following items are not permitted for entry:

  • Alcoholic beverages and beer
  • Tobacco in any form
  • Automotive fuel (except for the amount in the vehicle's fuel tank)

What Happens If You Exceed the Allowance?

If you exceed the allowed amounts, you will be required to pay taxes on the excess value.

Being aware of and complying with these regulations can help you avoid issues when crossing the border. For further details, visit the SAT’s official website or contact customs offices.
