The state of California is in a state of emergency due to the increase in avian flu cases in dairy cows
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) confirmed the first human case of avian flu on December 23, leading to warnings about the consumption of raw meat products for pets. This case was detected in a worker who had contact with infected livestock and exhibited mild symptoms, now in recovery.
The warning comes after the H5 avian flu virus was found in Northwest Naturals Brand 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe Raw & Frozen Pet Food, prompting a voluntary market withdrawal. A cat in Oregon died after consuming this food, alerting health authorities.
Officials have emphasized the dangers of raw foods, which can be a source of pathogens like avian flu. This is not the first time Los Angeles has warned about such risks; previously, there were alerts regarding raw milk after several cats died from consuming recalled dairy products.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on December 18 due to the rise in avian flu cases in California's dairy cows, enabling a more agile and coordinated response.
Symptoms in humans include eye redness, fever, and respiratory issues, and those working with infected animals are advised to take precautions and get vaccinated against seasonal flu to mitigate risks.
This outbreak has heightened concerns in the poultry and dairy industries, leading to more stringent biosecurity measures. Consumers and producers are urged to report signs of illness in animals and to avoid unpasteurized products. Pet stores in affected areas are removing the impacted products from their shelves as a preventive measure.
