They would have built a makeshift shelter

San Diego Border Patrol agents stayed with two injured and stranded Mexican women in the Otay Mountain wilderness, where they built a makeshift shelter until the women could be airlifted to safety, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The incident occurred after Mexican authorities issued a distress call shortly after midnight on Friday. The two women had irregularly crossed the border into the United States and were in an emergency situation, suffering from injuries and having limited food and water supplies. According to the report, one of them was pregnant.

Border Patrol agents located the women in a remote canyon, six miles east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

Upon arrival, agents determined that both women were unable to walk due to ankle injuries. However, adverse weather conditions, including freezing temperatures and dense fog, prevented the immediate use of a medical evacuation helicopter.

Given the situation, members of the Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue Team (BORSTAR) stayed with the women overnight and built a makeshift shelter to protect them from the cold. According to CBP, a cold front had caused temperatures in the mountain area to drop near freezing levels.

Once weather conditions improved, a San Diego Sheriff’s Department helicopter rescued the women the next morning and transported them to a nearby fire station for medical evaluation.

After receiving medical attention and being cleared, the women were taken to a Border Patrol station for processing and subsequent removal from the United States, CBP reported.
