A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook San Diego County and Southern California

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook San Diego County and several areas of Southern California on Monday morning, triggering landslides and rockfalls in some regions and prompting the closure of multiple roads. Immediately after the quake — which was followed by a series of aftershocks — several major roads in San Diego were shut down due to falling rocks and unstable terrain.

In Granite Hills, La Cresta Road was partially blocked in at least one lane at Valley Rim Road due to fallen rocks. In North County, Valley Center Road was closed at the intersection with Woods Valley Road as a result of a landslide. Also in North County, SR-76 was blocked between Public Road and Grade Road by debris on the roadway. Caltrans reported that crews are assessing the condition of the SR-76 infrastructure following the earthquake.

At the entrance of Palomar Mountain State Park, large boulders fell onto the road, and heavy machinery will be needed to remove them.

San Diego County officials stated that various agencies are currently inspecting roads and facilities for potential damage. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and local fire agencies reported that, so far, there have been no reports of major structural damage.
