Extreme temperatures expected from June 14 to 16

Municipal authorities have issued an extreme heat alert for the city of Mexicali and surrounding areas, set to take effect from 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, through 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 16, according to the Municipal Civil Protection Department.

During this period, dangerously high temperatures are expected, posing a significant health risk to the public. According to weather forecasts, temperatures on Saturday are expected to reach a high of 42°C (107.6°F), with a heat index of up to 44°C (111.2°F). Sunday, June 15, is projected to be the most critical day, with temperatures peaking at 45°C (113°F) and a heat index surpassing 47°C (116.6°F).

On Monday, highs of 44°C (111.2°F) are expected, with a perceived temperature of over 45°C (113°F).

In response to the forecast, the Civil Protection Department has issued several recommendations to help prevent heatstroke, dehydration, and other heat-related health risks:

* Avoid entering remote desert areas where direct sun exposure and extreme conditions can be deadly.

* Never leave children, the elderly, or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a short period.

* Refrain from outdoor sports or strenuous activities during peak sun hours, especially between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

* Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to help reflect heat.

* Outdoor workers should take frequent breaks and, if possible, adjust schedules to cooler hours.

* Use sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses for sun protection.

* Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

* Ensure pets are kept in shaded areas with constant access to fresh water.

* If feeling unwell or experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or fainting, seek help at temporary shelters set up by the municipal DIF in both the city and the Mexicali Valley.

* In case of emergency, residents are urged to call 911.

Authorities are calling on the public to stay informed through official channels and to follow these safety measures in order to prevent serious incidents during the upcoming period of extreme heat.
