Tablets and Technology: What’s Changing This Year in San Diego Schools
The sound of the first school bells marked the start of the new school year in San Diego on Monday, as thousands of students returned to classrooms for the 2026-2027 academic year.
The new school year comes as the San Diego Unified School District places greater emphasis on student well-being, literacy and math instruction, as well as college and career readiness. The district’s official calendar lists August 10 as the first day of school.

For families, the return to school marks the end of summer break and the beginning of a routine that once again means early mornings, transportation arrangements, packed meals and coordinating drop-off and pick-up schedules.
But this year, students will also see several changes involving the technology they use during the school day.
Fewer Digital Distractions in the Classroom
One of the major changes this school year involves the Chromebooks provided by the district.
Starting this year, video streaming platforms such as YouTube will be blocked on student devices unless teachers authorize their use for educational activities. Video game platforms that are not intended for academic purposes will also be blocked.
The measure is part of a broader shift in the district’s technology strategy. After several years in which schools expanded the use of digital devices, the focus is now on using technology more intentionally and in ways that are directly connected to learning.
In Transitional Kindergarten classrooms, computer carts will also be removed.
According to the district, the goal is to ensure that technology supports instruction without becoming a constant source of distraction for students.
Back to School Also Means Adjustments for Families
The first day of school does not only change students’ routines. For thousands of families, it also means once again coordinating a complex schedule.
Mornings are shaped by school start times, traffic and bus routes, while afternoons require parents to figure out who will pick up their children and how after-school activities will fit into the family schedule.
For many households, particularly those where both parents work, the return to school means reorganizing daily life around the school calendar.
For that reason, beyond the changes announced by the district, the start of the school year represents the return of a routine that will remain in place for the coming months.

District Also Seeks to Attract More Students
The new school year begins as San Diego Unified works to make the enrollment process easier and attract new families to the district.
The district launched an online enrollment system and, during the summer, opened 52 in-person enrollment hubs to assist families who needed help completing the registration process.
The effort comes as school districts across California face demographic changes and declining enrollment in some communities.
For San Diego Unified, the challenge is not only to welcome back students already enrolled in the district, but also to encourage new families to choose its schools.
Four Priorities for the New School Year
For the 2026-2027 school year, the district has identified four key areas of focus: student well-being, literacy, mathematics, and college and career readiness.
Through these priorities, school officials aim to make the new academic year about more than simply following the school calendar. The goal is also to improve academic performance while supporting students’ overall well-being.
