High temperatures are already affecting outdoor activities across San Diego. The heat has increased health risks for people spending long periods outside and has also led to temporary closures in popular outdoor areas.

 

San Diego River Gorge and Three Sisters, two trails in the Cleveland National Forest, were temporarily closed because of the extreme heat. The decision came after several rescues and emergency responses involving people affected by the high temperatures.

 

The conditions are especially concerning for hikers and others who spend hours outdoors, particularly during the hottest parts of the day.

 

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Older adults, children and people who are more vulnerable to extreme heat face a greater risk and are encouraged to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours.

 

The heat is also being felt at home. As temperatures rise, residents are relying more heavily on air conditioning and fans to stay comfortable, which can lead to higher electricity use and more expensive utility bills.

 

Another concern is the increased risk of wildfires. Hot temperatures combined with dry vegetation can create conditions that allow fires to spread more quickly, particularly in natural and open areas.

 

San Diego also has designated Cool Zones where residents can go to escape the heat and stay in a cooler environment during periods of extreme temperatures.

 

Officials are encouraging residents to drink plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and watch for warning signs such as dizziness, weakness, headaches or confusion.

 

For now, the heat is forcing residents and visitors to rethink some of their plans, especially when it comes to spending extended periods of time outdoors.
