Although Hurricane Marie will remain well offshore from California, its effects are expected to reach San Diego over the Labor Day weekend, primarily in the form of elevated surf and dangerous rip currents.

The National Weather Service in San Diego reported that surf will begin increasing Friday night and is expected to reach its highest levels between Sunday and Monday.

South- and southwest-facing beaches could see waves ranging from 6 to 10 feet, while west-facing beaches could experience surf between 4 and 7 feet.

Authorities are also expecting strong rip currents and longshore currents, creating potentially hazardous conditions for swimmers and surfers.
The elevated surf will coincide with high astronomical tides, which could lead to minor coastal flooding in low-lying areas and cause waves to reach farther inland along the beach than usual.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory and a Coastal Flood Advisory for San Diego County coastal areas from Saturday through Tuesday.

Marie does not pose a direct wind threat to San Diego, as the center of the system is expected to remain well offshore. However, moisture associated with the hurricane could also increase the potential for rain and isolated thunderstorms over the weekend.

Authorities are urging beachgoers to use extreme caution and avoid entering the water when conditions become hazardous.
