Public transit riders across San Diego County will begin paying more starting Thursday, October 1, when newly approved fares take effect for the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and North County Transit District (NCTD).

The change represents the region’s first significant fare increase since 2009 and will be implemented in two phases, with a second increase scheduled for October 2027. Transportation officials say the adjustments are intended to help address budget challenges while maintaining current service levels.

Beginning October 1, the regional one-way adult fare will increase from $2.50 to $3. The regional monthly pass will rise from $72 to $85.

For seniors, people with disabilities and Medicare beneficiaries, the monthly pass will increase from $23 to $28, while the one-way fare will be $1.50.
There will also be changes for COASTER riders. 

The system will move away from its current three-zone fare structure and establish a one way fare of $6.50 for adults and $3.25 for riders eligible for reduced fares. The monthly COASTER pass will cost $185 for adults and $60 for reduced-fare riders.

The second phase of the fare increase will take effect on October 1, 2027. At that time, the regional adult fare will rise to $3.25, while the regional monthly pass will increase to $95.

As part of the changes, MTS and NCTD will also launch PRONTO LIFE, a new reduced fare program for low-income riders who are enrolled in CalFresh, Medi-Cal or CalWORKs and meet the eligibility requirements. Approved riders will have access to reduced fares on certain regional services.

In addition, the Youth Opportunity Pass will continue allowing eligible young people age 18 and under to ride public transit for free under the program.

Transportation officials say the new fares are part of a regional strategy to maintain transit operations and prevent budget challenges from significantly affecting the frequency of buses, trains and other public transportation services across San Diego County.
