The National Weather Service forecasts gusts of up to 55 mph in valleys and over 65 mph in some mountain areas, prompting officials to urge residents to secure their homes and prepare evacuation plans

Santa Ana winds are expected to return to San Diego County on Thursday, bringing conditions that could increase the risk of wildfires due to strong gusts, low humidity, and dry vegetation.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), northerly to northeasterly winds are forecast from Thursday through Saturday, with the strongest and most widespread conditions expected on Friday.

The NWS warned that wind gusts could reach 35 to 55 mph in valley areas, while localized gusts could exceed 65 mph along coastal slopes and mountain passes. On Thursday, minimum relative humidity could drop to between 15% and 25% in valleys and inland coastal areas.

These conditions can accelerate wildfire spread and carry embers toward homes and other structures. Strong winds can also bring down tree branches, damage power lines, and create hazardous driving conditions.

In response to the forecast, state authorities have announced measures to strengthen wildfire response efforts across Southern California, including the strategic positioning of emergency resources and specialized personnel.

Recommendations to Prevent Wildfires

Fire officials recommend taking precautions before the winds intensify:

  • Remove dry leaves, branches, brush, and other combustible materials from yards, roofs, and gutters.

  • Maintain defensible space around your home and keep flammable materials away from buildings.

  • Avoid campfires, debris burning, and activities that could generate sparks during periods of strong winds.

  • Never throw cigarette butts out of vehicle windows or leave hot materials near dry vegetation.

  • Secure patio furniture, awnings, umbrellas, and other items that could be blown away by strong gusts.

  • Prepare an emergency go-bag with water, medications, important documents, phone chargers, and essential supplies for each family member.

  • Identify evacuation routes and monitor official emergency alerts.

  • Follow evacuation orders immediately and do not return to affected areas until authorities authorize it.

The National Weather Service advises residents to check local alerts regularly, as wind intensity and wildfire danger may vary across coastal communities, valleys, and mountain areas.

Residents can find weather updates through the official NWS San Diego website and wildfire preparedness information from CAL FIRE.

Preparing in advance is especially important during Santa Ana wind events, when even a small ignition source can quickly develop into a major wildfire.
