A 34-year-old man was wounded in a shooting following a pursuit that began in Riverside County. Authorities closed southbound vehicle traffic into Mexico and redirected motorists to the Otay Mesa Port of Entry

A law enforcement operation that began in Riverside County ended in a shooting involving a U.S. Border Patrol agent near the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Wednesday night, November 4.

The incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m., after authorities pursued a suspect allegedly connected to a grand theft case in the Jurupa Valley area of Riverside County, California.

According to preliminary law enforcement radio communications, the driver reportedly attempted to enter Mexico through the San Ysidro Port of Entry, where a significant backup of vehicles had already formed due to heavy border traffic.

During the attempted escape, the suspect was reportedly involved in several collisions while maneuvering between vehicles waiting to cross the border. However, authorities have not confirmed how many vehicles were involved or whether anyone else was injured.

The pursuit ended near the border crossing with a shooting involving a federal Border Patrol agent. Authorities have not disclosed what led to the gunfire or whether the suspect was armed.

According to emergency medical radio communications, a 34-year-old man sustained two gunshot wounds: one to his right arm and another to his right thigh. Both injuries were described as through-and-through wounds.

Paramedics reportedly applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding. His medical condition and the hospital to which he was transported have not been confirmed.

Southbound traffic into Tijuana shut down

Following the shooting, authorities ordered the closure of all southbound vehicle lanes at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, causing significant disruptions for travelers attempting to enter Tijuana.

As an alternative, motorists were redirected to the Otay Mesa Port of Entry to cross into Mexico.

At approximately 1 a.m. Thursday, November 5, southbound vehicle traffic at San Ysidro remained closed.

Witness Eddie Cortese recorded part of the incident on his cellphone and shared his account of how the events unfolded.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the wounded man. Details regarding the reported collisions, the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and any potential criminal charges also remain unconfirmed.

The case is expected to be reviewed by the appropriate federal authorities, although the lead investigative agency has not yet been identified.

The story remains developing. Some details are based on preliminary law enforcement and emergency medical radio communications.

Additional official information is expected from authorities in the coming hours.
