Federal health officials are continuing to investigate an outbreak of Salmonella Javiana infections linked to fresh jalapeño peppers distributed by a San Diego-based company. The investigation has prompted a voluntary recall of the product and temporary supply changes at several restaurant chains.

 

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the jalapeños were grown in the Mexican state of Sinaloa and distributed in the United States by Coast Citrus Distributors, a wholesale produce company based in San Diego.

 

 

So far, the outbreak has sickened 345 people in 27 states and resulted in 36 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported. Investigators say most illnesses have been linked to people who ate at Mexican-style restaurants between mid-June and mid-July.

 

As a precaution, restaurant chains including Chipotle and QDOBA have temporarily removed fresh jalapeños from their menus or switched suppliers while the investigation continues. Health officials said there is currently no identified risk to customers at those restaurants following the preventive measures.

 

The FDA said the recall primarily affects jalapeños distributed to restaurants and food service businesses. The agency added that, at this time, there is no evidence that fresh jalapeños sold directly in grocery stores are associated with the outbreak.

 

 

Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Symptoms typically develop between six hours and six days after consuming contaminated food. While most people recover without treatment, the illness can be severe in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

 

Federal investigators continue to trace the distribution chain to determine whether additional businesses or products are involved. Consumers are encouraged to monitor official FDA and CDC updates for any additional recalls or public health advisories.
