So far, it is unknown how long this clandestine structure had been in operation

A sophisticated tunnel believed to have been used for drug trafficking was discovered on Tuesday, June 17, during a joint operation between Mexican and U.S. authorities. The tunnel was found in a residence near the Otay Port of Entry, one of the busiest border crossings between Mexico and the United States.

The underground passage, approximately 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) in length, connected a two-story house in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood located at the intersection of Macedonio Alcalá and Gustavo Campa streets to a warehouse complex on the U.S. side of the border.

Unofficial sources revealed that the discovery came after U.S. authorities detected anomalies in the area but were unable to locate the tunnel’s exit. This prompted coordination with Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to trace its origin.

The operation, carried out by members of the National Guard, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), and the Mexican Army (Sedena), resulted in the seizure of the property. No arrests were reported.

Víctorino Porcayo, the FGR’s delegate in Baja California, personally oversaw the inspection, while authorities continue to analyze the tunnel’s characteristics and its possible links to organized crime groups.

It remains unclear how long the clandestine structure had been in operation or what kind of goods were being transported through it. However, its level of sophistication suggests it was part of a well-organized drug trafficking network.

This discovery adds to a long list of drug tunnels found along the Tijuana-San Diego border, one of the most active corridors for drug trafficking in the world.

Investigations are ongoing to determine more details about the tunnel’s use and to identify those responsible for its construction.
