The initiative seeks to involve artists and residents in decision-making regarding the distribution of funds to bring culture to the neighborhoods

In order for artists and San Diego residents to participate in the distribution of funds collected for arts and culture, a call is being launched to determine how to invest more in arts and culture in neighborhoods.

Bearing in mind that most of the funds received by the different organizations promoting culture are provided by taxpayers, the decision has been made to present a draft called "Creative City" that involves them.

This project seeks to guide art investments in tune with the rest of the city's priorities, such as climate action and parks. In addition, it is emphasized that taking these programs to the interior of the communities will keep young people away from vices, gangs and other social effects.

“We're asking the community to tell us how they really want to experience arts and culture in their city,” said Jonathon Glus, executive director of the San Diego Arts and Culture Commission.

Glus explained that this plan will focus on areas such as the development and retention of artists and creative workforces, neighborhood creative hubs, arts marketing, cultural tourism, and crowd-impact strategies.

He also reported that said strategy is projected for seven to 10 years. San Diego-based consulting firm Cultural Planning Group LLC has been hired to facilitate the planning process, including obtaining input from the public, as well as industry and sector-specific groups. It is expected to be ready by 2025.
