Since early July, there has been an uptick in Covid-19 hospitalizations in the United States, following a pattern similar to previous summers. While this resurgence raises concerns, experts point out that the number of hospitalized patients is significantly lower than in previous waves.

 

In the last week of July, there were 9,056 hospitalizations due to Covid-19, representing a 12% increase compared to the previous week. However, specialists like Dr. David Dowdy, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University, emphasize that the current increase does not warrant immediate alarm.

 

As the Omicron variant continues to evolve, an updated version of the vaccine, known as XBB.1.5, is expected to be available in the fall. This new version of the vaccine will contain significant modifications to address the characteristics of the Omicron variant. While a precise date for the distribution of these updated vaccines has not been set, they are anticipated to be available during the fall and winter seasons.

 

Dr. Mandy Cohen, the director of the CDC, suggests that individuals could receive the Covid-19 vaccine along with the influenza vaccine, taking advantage of spaces in pharmacies and workplaces. Despite ongoing challenges, experts are confident that the combination of available tools will allow for a more effective response than in previous stages of the pandemic.
