The Department of Fish and Wildlife urges caution during the spring months

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has issued a warning about the rise in snake bites in the state during the months of March, April, and May. According to data collected by the department, this period represents the peak time for such incidents, with a significant increase in encounters between humans and venomous snakes, such as the rattlesnake.

These findings underscore the importance of remaining vigilant and taking precautions while enjoying nature during the spring season.

However, while spring is the most active time for snake bites, October marks a notable decrease in reported incidents. The California Toxicology System has confirmed that calls related to snake bites decrease significantly as the year progresses.

Wildlife and safety experts strongly advise residents and visitors of California to be prepared and take additional precautions starting from March. It is essential to understand how to act in the event of an encounter with a venomous snake, especially the rattlesnake, whose bite can be potentially dangerous.

Recommended precautions include staying alert while walking in wilderness areas, wearing appropriate clothing and footwear that cover most of the body, and avoiding direct contact with snakes if possible. Additionally, it is advisable to carry a first aid kit and know how to administer first aid in the event of a bite.

Ultimately, awareness and preparedness are crucial to ensuring personal safety and responsibly enjoying the natural beauty of California throughout the year.
