Authorities indicate he may be safe thanks to the bulletproof vest

On Monday around 2:45 p.m., a motorized deputy from Los Angeles was shot in the back. The incident occurred in the area of Barranca and Garvey avenues while the uniformed officer was stopped at a traffic light in West Covina.

The nearly 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who was en route to a training session, managed to issue an emergency transmission after being shot.

Following a search for the suspect, authorities worked to track a vehicle, described only as a white truck with a black roof rack, in the 600 block of Mangate Avenue, along Valinda Avenue in La Puente.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said several individuals were detained during the search for the suspect but have since been released as the investigation continues.

The injured deputy was wearing a bulletproof vest and is expected to recover. The exact condition of the deputy's health has not yet been confirmed by authorities.
