Neighbor charged with murder

A couple living at the Olive Dell Ranch in San Bernardino County, Southern California, about 65 miles east of Los Angeles near the cities of Redlands and Colton, went missing for several days until a 911 call led police to their neighbor’s house. Michael Royce Sparks, 62, was charged with two counts of murder after admitting to killing two people. Human remains found at his home were identified as those of Daniel Menard, 79, and his wife, Stephanie Menard, 73.

The Menards, residents of the Olive Dell Ranch, a 100-acre nudist community with RVs and mobile homes, were last seen on August 24. Their concerned neighbor discovered their abandoned car and, upon entering their home, found no trace of them. A few days later, Sparks’ family alerted authorities, leading to his arrest.

Sparks was found hiding beneath his home, armed and barricaded. After lengthy negotiations, he attempted to shoot himself, but his gun misfired. Neighbors described Sparks as a “loner” and mentioned previous tensions between him and the Menards.

Police continue to investigate the motive, while the cause of death has yet to be determined.

The Menards enjoyed playing poker, gathering with friends for karaoke, and attending Bible study and church services on weekends, according to their neighbor Irene Engkraf. Information shared by CNN.
