The service, which has been free for most residents for over a century

San Diego is evaluating the implementation of fees for trash and recycling collection, a service that has been free for most residents for over a century. This possibility follows the approval of Measure B in 2022, which allows the city to establish specific charges for these services.

Since late summer, community workshops have been held to gather public opinions and suggestions. So far, around 6,000 residents have participated, proposing improvements such as new bins, bulk item collection, and events to dispose of hard-to-manage materials.

However, some residents are concerned about the economic impact. While some see potential benefits, others worry about the additional costs, especially those with limited incomes.

Currently, nearly 300,000 households rely on municipal services, which are funded through the city’s general fund. This fund does not include a dedicated budget for trash and recycling collection.

The workshops will continue until December 10, and the final proposal is expected to be voted on by the city council in June 2024. If approved, the new fees and services could take effect in July 2025. For more information, visit https://cleangreensd.org. Information from Fox5SanDiego.
