It will make transit access easier through the use of Apple Pay, allowing passengers to pay without unlocking their device or opening any app

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and the North County Transit District (NCTD) have announced the launch of "Express Mode," a new feature that will allow users to pay for public transportation with a simple tap from their iPhone or Apple Watch.

This system, which is not yet available for Android devices or Google Pay, aims to improve access to public transit by utilizing Apple Pay. Passengers will be able to pay for their ride without unlocking their device or opening an app—simply by holding their device near a Pronto validator.

"Express Mode" will be available on all MTS buses and trolleys, as well as NCTD COASTER, SPRINTER, BREEZE, and FLEX services.
A Benefit for Residents and Visitors

According to MTS and NCTD officials, this innovation will not only benefit regular commuters but also the millions of tourists who visit San Diego each year.

"NCTD is excited to work with Apple to make public transit more accessible for both residents and visitors," said Shawn M. Donaghy, NCTD Chief Executive Officer, highlighting that this system expands on the contactless payment option introduced last year.

To use "Express Mode," users must enable it in their Apple Wallet by following these steps:
1. Open the Wallet app and select a card.
2. Tap the "More" button, then select "Card Details."
3. Choose "Express Transit Settings" or "Express Mode."
4. Select the preferred card or pass.

Each time a user taps their device on a Pronto reader, a one-way adult fare will be automatically charged to the selected card. The fare is valid for two hours, allowing free transfers within that period. It is important to note that each passenger must use a separate Apple device for payment.
