He spent bribe money on luxury properties and exclusive items.
Jesse Clark García, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer assigned to San Diego, has pleaded guilty in federal court to allowing drug shipments into the United States in exchange for multimillion-dollar bribes, which he spent on a lavish lifestyle that included properties, luxury vehicles, and designer goods.
García admitted to nine counts related to the importation of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine. He operated at the Tecate Port of Entry, where he allegedly charged “tens of thousands of dollars” for each drug-laden vehicle he allowed to cross the border.
Court documents revealed that García lived "far beyond" what his CBP salary could support. His extravagant expenses included:
* Properties: A home in San Diego, a ranch under construction in Mexico, and a stake in a racehorse stable.
* Luxury items: Clothing and accessories from high-end brands such as Burberry and Louis Vuitton.
* Vehicles: Multiple high-value cars, though specific makes were not disclosed.
Prosecutors said García coordinated with traffickers to ensure drug-filled vehicles were routed through lanes he was supervising during specific time windows. He is scheduled to be sentenced in September.
The case also implicates Diego Bonillo, another CBP officer accused of facilitating drug crossings at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. His trial is set to begin later this month.
The scandal highlights the vulnerabilities to corruption within border enforcement agencies and how the drug trade can compromise even those tasked with stopping it. Authorities say more officers may be under investigation.
