Schools remain open across San Diego County, but some districts are moving outdoor activities indoors as temperatures climb

San Diego is experiencing one of the hottest days of the week Wednesday, with an excessive heat warning in effect through 8 p.m. and a heat advisory continuing through Thursday evening.

The most intense heat is expected in the county’s inland valleys, where temperatures could climb as high as 107 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Overnight lows are expected to remain in the 70s, offering limited relief from the heat.

The warning includes communities such as La Mesa, El Cajon, San Marcos, Poway, Santee and Escondido, as well as other inland areas.

Along the coast, including San Diego, Chula Vista, National City, Oceanside, Vista, Encinitas and Carlsbad, temperatures are expected to reach the mid-80s to low 90s. Some higher-elevation areas could approach 100 degrees.

Are schools closing?

So far, the heat has not prompted a countywide closure of schools in San Diego County. Classes are continuing, but some districts have adjusted schedules and activities to limit students’ exposure to extreme temperatures.

In Chula Vista, the Chula Vista Elementary School District said schools will remain open, but from Tuesday through Thursday, recess, lunch and physical education classes are being held indoors.

The district has also provided additional water breaks and encouraged students to wear lightweight clothing and use sunscreen.

Parents are encouraged to check messages directly from their children’s school or district, as heat-related changes may differ from one campus to another.

What about sports and outdoor activities?

The National Weather Service is advising people to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and to stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever posible.

The guidance is particularly important for young children, older adults and anyone exercising or working outdoors, as prolonged exposure to high temperatures can increase the risk of heat-related illness.

Parents should make sure children drink plenty of water, limit time in direct sunlight and take frequent breaks in cool or shaded areas.

Families should also pay attention to signs of heat-related illness, particularly during sports practices, playground time and other outdoor activities.

The heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday, September 10, meaning hot conditions could continue to affect school schedules and outdoor activities over the next several days.
