Old Town and Chula Vista will host free events this weekend to commemorate Mexico’s Independence Day

San Diego will host several events this weekend to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day, with live music, traditional dance, Mexican crafts and the traditional El Grito ceremonies taking place across the city and South Bay.

One of the weekend’s events will take place Saturday, September 12, at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Fiestas Patrias will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with free admission.

The program will include live music, Mexican crafts and living history demonstrations highlighting Mexican traditions and the historical ties between Mexico and California.

Also on Saturday, The Old Globe in Balboa Park will host its own Mexican Independence Day celebration from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event will feature live music, dance performances, folkloric ballet, charros, Mexican crafts and a piñata-making workshop. It will also include the traditional El Grito ceremony, led by Mexico’s Consul General in San Diego, Alicia Kerber. Admission to the event will also be free.

El Grito comes to Chula Vista

The celebrations will continue Sunday, September 13, at Memorial Park in Chula Vista with the city’s annual El Grito ceremony.

The event will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. and will feature live music, mariachi, folkloric dance, food and a Mexican artisan market.

The celebration will be held at 373 Park Way, Chula Vista, and admission will be free.

With several free events scheduled throughout the weekend, San Diego and Chula Vista will offer residents and visitors different ways to celebrate Mexican Independence Day and enjoy Mexican culture and traditions.
