The incident occurred in Dallas, Texas

A man in Dallas, Texas, has been arrested for killing his girlfriend after she had an abortion without his consent. The incident took place in the early hours of Friday, May 13th in the parking lot of the apartment where they lived together.

According to police reports, 22-year-old Harold Thompson argued with his girlfriend, 26-year-old Hispanic woman Gabriela Gonzalez, after finding out she had an abortion. The argument escalated until the man pulled out a gun and shot her in the head; even when Gabriela's body was already motionless on the ground, he continued to shoot. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, but died shortly afterwards due to her injuries.

In fact, surveillance footage from the parking lot shows how Gonzalez “pushed him off”, the police said, and the two continued walking. Thompson then pulls out a gun and shoots Gonzalez in the head. It should be noted that Thompson was later arrested and is being held in Dallas County jail. Gonzalez's sister was at the scene and heard several shots, the police said.

At the time of the attack, Thompson had been charged with assaulting a family member, who accused him of trying to strangle her in March. "She reiterated that she was afraid of the suspect because he had threatened to harm her family and children," the affidavit added.

Local authorities have condemned the murder, stating that abortion is a women's right and cannot be justification for committing a crime. Dallas District Attorney Faith Johnson said at a press conference: "No matter what your opinion is on abortion, you cannot take another person's life. That is unacceptable and is a crime."

In September 2021, Texas banned abortions after about six weeks of gestation, but almost all abortions have been stopped in Texas since the Roe v. Wade ruling was overturned last year, except in cases of medical emergency.

Gender-based violence and control over women's bodies remain serious issues in many parts of the world, and the murder of this young Hispanic woman is a painful reminder of the need to continue fighting for women's rights.

The Hispanic community in Dallas has come together to express their grief and support for the victim's family. According to reports, a vigil will be held in her memory in the coming days.

The murder has caused shock in Texan society and across the United States, reigniting the debate about abortion and gender-based violence in the country.
