San Diego Mayor Seeks to Relocate 1,000 Homeless Individuals to Temporary Shelter

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria announced today plans to relocate 1,000 individuals experiencing homelessness to a temporary shelter.

"The 60,000-square-foot commercial building located at Kettner and Vine will serve as a new shelter, similar to all other shelters in the city. It will include on-site security, meals, housing, and case management," Mayor Todd Gloria stated.

"We will be adding showers and bathrooms, a commercial kitchen, laundry facilities, dining areas, and recreational spaces to meet the needs of the residents who will stay here."

The plan involves the city leasing the vacant building and converting it into a shelter. It is located behind the airport directly to the east and is adjacent to Highway 5.

If approved, it would be the largest homeless shelter in the city. San Diego also has plans to build a homeless shelter space at the vacant H Barracks, which are close to Harbor Island.

The mayor informed the media that the city is on track to convert the barracks into a safe parking lot for homeless individuals. This move could potentially assist around 200 families by allowing them to sleep in their vehicles there. He assured that he will seek resources from the general fund and support from the philanthropic community.
