The owner of a single-family home requested assistance after keeping around 48 cats in their residence

The San Diego Humane Society removed dozens of pets from a single-family home in San Diego County after the overwhelmed owner asked for help.

The Humane Society rescued 48 cats and two dogs on Friday from a home in the La Mesa area, according to Humane Society spokesperson Nina Thompson. The animals were taken to the organization's campuses, where they received flea treatments and vaccinations before being placed in appropriate housing.

The pets will undergo medical exams and spay or neuter surgeries, Thompson said. Once they are cleared by the team, they will be made available for adoption.

"It is too early to comment on the health of the animals, because they have not received their full medical exams yet," Thompson told Patch.

The rescue occurred at a time when the Humane Society was already over capacity with 1,962 animals, including 939 cats and 795 dogs, according to the organization.
