Amid speculations of mass deportations, associations protest Border Patrol presence

The increasing presence of Border Patrol agents in California is causing concern among migrant communities and labor rights organizations. In recent days, reports indicate that Border Patrol activity has intensified in the agricultural fields of Kern County, where dozens of arrests have been made.

An investigation by Univision, based on received complaints, revealed the constant surveillance of Border Patrol in the region, known for its vineyards and high concentration of Latino migrant workers.

According to the report, agents have been spotted near grape fields heading toward Maricopa. Additionally, information provided by the United Farm Workers Foundation indicates that on January 7 and 8, around 192 detentions took place in the area.

It is presumed that those arrested were transferred to the local Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office. Testimonies gathered by Univision suggest that the detentions occurred after agents questioned workers about their immigration status.

This Friday, farmworkers and activists held a protest in Bakersfield in support of the migrant community, demanding an end to the operations and greater transparency in Border Patrol actions.

So far, authorities have not issued official statements regarding the detentions or the increase in their presence in the area, leaving the community in a state of uncertainty.
