Announces closures in San Diego and other parts of California as part of nationwide cuts

Retail giant Macy’s has announced the closure of 66 stores across the United States, including two in San Diego County and a total of ten in California. The affected locations in San Diego are at 1555 Camino De La Reina, in Mission Valley, and 2015 Birch Road, at the Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista.

These closures are part of the company’s strategy known as the “Bold New Chapter,” which involves shutting down 150 stores over three years to ensure sustainable and profitable sales growth, according to the company.

Most of the closures are expected to take place during the first quarter of this year. “Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underperforming Macy’s stores to focus on our core locations, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Macy’s Chairman and CEO Tony Spring said in a statement.

In Southern California, Macy’s will also close locations in downtown Los Angeles and Westminster, in Orange County. The remaining five stores in the state are located in Northern California.

These closures come just weeks after Party City, another major retail chain, announced the closure of all its stores, including ten in San Diego County. According to Party City CEO Barry Litwin, the company ceased operations immediately due to severe financial difficulties. This follows its bankruptcy declaration in September 2023, during which it canceled nearly $1 billion in debt but still faced liabilities exceeding $800 million.
